Why notifications matter
SkillSwap is built around real people and live 1:1 sessions. Notifications make sure you never miss a message, a match, or an upcoming session. They also help you react quickly when someone sends you a session request or confirms one you’ve been waiting for.
The platform currently supports email notifications for the most important events, with additional channels coming later (push notifications, SMS, mobile alerts).
Where to manage your notifications
Open your profile settings at app.skillswap.io/settings and click to the Notifications tab.
There you’ll see toggles for the main categories of alerts.
Types of notifications
1. Session-related notifications
These are the most important alerts — they help keep your sessions on track.
- New session request — someone asks you to be their tutor.
- Session accepted — your requested session was confirmed.
- Session cancelled — either side cancels an upcoming session.
- Upcoming session reminder — sent 1 hour before the start time.
2. Messages & chat
When someone sends you a new message, SkillSwap can notify you so you don’t leave them waiting. These notifications trigger when:
- You receive a new message in an existing chat
- You receive your first message from a newly matched person
3. Match-related alerts
These keep your learning journey active and dynamic:
- New match — someone with relevant skills accepted your match request.
- Match suggestion — SkillSwap found a new high-scoring match for you.
4. Account & security
You will also receive emails for important account actions:
- Password reset requests
- Security-related updates
- Login warnings from unknown devices (coming soon)
How to change notification settings
Each notification type has its own toggle inside your profile settings:
- Turn notifications on to receive email updates
- Turn them off if you prefer to check the app manually
Changes apply instantly and you can update them anytime. You can also turn off all optional notifications while still receiving critical security and system emails.
Why some emails cannot be disabled
Certain emails are essential for safety and compliance. These include:
- Password reset emails
- Security warnings
- Critical service updates
These ensure your account stays protected, even if you’ve turned off all optional notifications.
Troubleshooting email notifications
- Check your Spam or Promotions folder — sometimes new senders are filtered.
- Add no-reply@skillswap.io and hello@skillswap.io to your contacts to prevent misdelivery.
- Make sure your email address in Account Settings is spelled correctly.
What’s coming soon
SkillSwap will introduce additional channels for notifications:
- Push notifications (web + mobile)
- In-app mobile alerts
- Quiet Hours mode to pause alerts at night
