What "right tutor" means on SkillSwap

The right tutor is someone whose skills, communication style and availability fit your goals. SkillSwap's matching system helps you find them, but you still stay in control of whom you choose to learn from.

Start from your goals

Before you look at profiles, ask yourself:

  • What do I want to achieve in the next 1–3 sessions?
  • Do I prefer structured explanations or informal conversation?
  • What language am I most comfortable learning in?

Use the Matches page

Go to the Matches page to see suggested partners based on your Skills to Learn, languages and timezone. Higher match scores mean better alignment across these factors.

What to look for in a tutor profile

  • Skills they teach that match your top goals
  • A clear, friendly bio
  • Languages you share
  • XP level and badges that show consistent activity

Send a thoughtful first message

Once you find someone promising, open a chat and send a short message explaining what you want to work on. For example:

  • Hi! I'm learning UX design and would love a 45‑minute session to review my portfolio. Would that be okay?

Try, then decide

It's okay if the first tutor you try isn't a perfect fit. Use the first session to test communication, pacing and teaching style. If it works — great. If not, you can try someone else next time.
