Life happens — here's how to handle changes
Sometimes plans change. SkillSwap makes it simple to cancel or reschedule a session while keeping things fair and respectful for both sides.
Where to manage your sessions
Go to the Calendar page and find your session in one of these tabs:
- Upcoming — confirmed sessions that are already scheduled
- Requests — pending requests that haven't been accepted yet
Cancelling a pending request
If the other person hasn't accepted yet, you can cancel the request instantly:
- Open the session in the Requests tab
- Click Cancel
Any reserved Skill Points (SP) are immediately returned to your available balance.
Cancelling a confirmed session
If a session is already confirmed and appears in Upcoming, you'll see a Cancel option on the session card.
When you cancel:
- The session is marked as Cancelled
- Reserved or deducted SP are handled according to the cancellation rules below
- Both sides see the update in their Calendar
Suggested etiquette
- Cancel as early as possible — ideally at least a few hours before the start
- Send a quick message in chat explaining what happened and, if possible, propose a new time
- Avoid repeated last‑minute cancellations — they can impact how others see you as a partner
Rescheduling a session
SkillSwap doesn't currently move existing sessions to a new time automatically. Instead, the standard flow is:
- Cancel the current session
- Agree on a new time in chat
- The learner sends a new session request with the updated details
SP and fairness
SkillSwap may apply different SP rules depending on when a session is cancelled and local policies in your region. As a general principle:
- Early cancellations are usually fully refunded (SP go back to the learner)
- Repeated last‑minute cancellations can affect trust and future matching
Best practices for both sides
- Communicate clearly in chat when something changes
- Respect each other's time — treat sessions like real appointments
- If the other person doesn't show up, talk first before deciding whether to continue working with them
