Why your profile matters
Your SkillSwap profile is the foundation of your experience — it’s how people understand who you are, what you can teach, and what you want to learn. A clear, complete profile dramatically improves your match quality and makes others more likely to accept your requests.
This guide shows you how to set up each part of your profile and what makes a strong first impression.
How to access your profile
You can edit your profile anytime by opening app.skillswap.io/profile or by tapping your avatar in the navbar on desktop or mobile.
Your profile fields
Every profile contains a few essential pieces of information. Some are optional, but completing everything makes your profile more trustworthy and improves matching.
1. Name
We recommend using just your first name. It keeps your profile friendly, simple, and consistent with SkillSwap’s community style.
2. Avatar (optional but highly recommended)
A clear, friendly photo immediately boosts trust. Profiles with avatars get matched and accepted more often.
- Use a well-lit photo.
- Show your face clearly.
- Avoid heavy filters or distracting backgrounds.
3. Short bio (optional)
A single sentence about who you are or what you’re working on can make a big difference.
Great examples include:
- “Frontend student building my first full-stack project.”
- “Helping beginners master piano basics and rhythm.”
- “Marketing freelancer exploring UI/UX design.”
4. Skills to teach (required)
These are the skills you feel comfortable helping others with. Choose at least one to unlock teaching opportunities and earn Skill Points by tutoring.
This directly affects your match visibility — people searching for skills you teach will find you sooner.
5. Skills to learn (required)
These define what SkillSwap should match you with. Add the top skills you want to improve — from programming to languages to hobbies.
The system compares your learning goals with other users' teaching skills to create accurate, meaningful matches.
6. Languages (required)
Select the languages you are comfortable speaking during a live session. Clear communication is essential for effective learning and teaching.
Language matching is one of the strongest factors in the algorithm — the more precise you are here, the better your matches.
7. Timezone (auto-detected, editable)
SkillSwap automatically detects your timezone, but you can change it anytime. This ensures that all session times are displayed correctly for both you and your partner.
How your profile affects matching
- The more details you include, the higher your chances of receiving high match scores.
- A complete profile makes others more comfortable accepting your session requests.
- Well-chosen skills-to-learn make your Matches feed significantly more accurate.
Updating your profile later
You’re not locked into anything — your profile can grow with you. Update your skills, bio, avatar or languages anytime as your goals evolve. SkillSwap will automatically adapt your match recommendations.
Next steps
Once your profile is ready, you can move on to exploring matches and booking your first session.
